What we are learning
This page will inform you about what we are learning in class in all subject areas for each month. The students will also be bringing home their work duotangs on Fridays for you to view work they have completed. Please ensure these duotangs come back to school every Monday.
Leader in Me/TRIBES
Habit 1 — Be Proactive
This habit promotes the idea of `You're in Charge`. The `motto`behind this habit is:
I am a responsible person. I take initiative. I choose my actions, attitudes, and moods. I do not blame others for my wrong actions. I do the right thing without being asked, even when no one is looking.
Throughout the month we will be disucssing what it means and looks like to be proactive and incorporating activities that encourage students to think about how they can take charge and be their own leader.
We will also be including some community building activities through the TRIBES program which will help build and inclusive, positive and safe environment in our classroom.
Language
We will be starting our reading centers this month. Through the month of September, we have built our `stamina` and learned and practiced how to `do` each center and now we are ready to begin. Students will move through Reading to Someone (partner reading with a point), Listening to Reading, Guided Reading and Read to Self (independent reading). Between centers we will have mini focus lessons which will include a Read Aloud and/or Shared Readings focusing on a specific teaching point which the students can then incorporate into their reading. Our focus will be on comprehension through retelling of the story. They have also been, and will continue reflecting on why we practice reading, and what strategies we can use to become more proficient readers.
Writer`s workshop will also begin. This will be geared to the student`s writing abilities, focusing on the process of writing rather than the product. `Workshops` will be based on the 6 traits of writing (ideas, sentence fluency, organization, word choice, voice and conventions). Our main focus for October will be on the ideas trait. Students will continue to write indepently in their journals on a daily basis.
Math
We are continuing patterns, but the focus now is on number patterns (repeating, in a hundred`s chart) leading into our Number Sense and Numeracy focus of number relationships (reading, representing, comparing and ordering numbers to 50) and counting (forward to 100 by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and backwards from 20).
Science
We will be continuing our study of living things (needs and characteristics of humans, animals, plants, etc.)
Social Studies
We will be continuing our focus on Relationships, Rules and Responsibilities which will include our field trip to the Safety Village this month!
Phys. Ed
We will be continuing our movement games and general gym safety. We will also be learning about the changes our body undergoes when we actively participate (heart rate, breathing, boody temperature, etc.).
