Adventures in Grade 1 http://mrsstortini.posterous.com Mount Pleasant School posterous.com Mon, 22 Oct 2012 16:53:00 -0700 Weekly Words suggestion - vowels http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/weekly-words-suggestion-vowels http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/weekly-words-suggestion-vowels

With the new weekly words, the students are now encountering some words they may not be very familiar with.  In class we are talking about the "Magic E" who silently sits at the end of some words and makes the vowel in the word say its name/long vowel sound; for example, in "came" the Magic E makes the A say "a" not "ahh".  We have also talked about the rule "when two vowels go walking, the first does the talking".  So, for example in "each", the E does all the talking (says its name/long vowel sound) and the A stays silent.

I encourage you to use these terms at home to help your child remember how to read and write these words.  I also encourage you to talk about the long and short vowels and sounds with your child - they are quite good at telling the difference!

Happy practicing!

Thu, 18 Oct 2012 18:34:00 -0700 Thank You! http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/thank-you http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/thank-you

I just wanted to thank all of you that sent back the Highlights magazine signature forms!  We received 12 responses back for each form - that means we received quite a few free prizes for the classroom including a finger pointer for the star of the day to use, 30 e-books and much more!  So, thank you again!

For those of you that answered "yes" - you will receive the first subscription in about 4-6 weeks.  Sorry for the delay, I wanted to give everyone a chance to send them back.  Thanks for your patience!

I have been unable to update the weekly words due to technical difficulties, however, all students have the list in their agendas.  Our spelling review will take place tomorrow (Friday).

I am also unable to update the calendar at the moment.  There are some adjustments I would like to note:

  • Friday October 19 is PITA day.  There will not be pizza for sale.
  • Friday October 26 is our October Mustang Rodeo Assembly

Computers

We now have everyone's consent form back (yay!).  If you are able, please send headphones/ear buds with your child.  They can leave these in their desk and bring them with us to the computer lab.  You are not required to send headphone/ear buds, but it would be helpful as the noise level is quite high when all the students are logged on.

Following the Site

Please click on "follow" (top right hand corner) to be alerted when I update the site.  Thank you!

Safety Village Field Trip

Permission forms will be sent home next week.

Sun, 23 Sep 2012 18:53:00 -0700 Ways to practice Weekly Words http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/ways-to-practice http://mrsstortini.posterous.com/ways-to-practice

Here are some fun ways to incorporate word study at home to help your child practice our weekly words.  By knowing these words the students will have an easier time reading when they don't have to stop and sound out sight words.  And, of course, as we all know . . . practice makes (nearly) perfect.

  1. Rainbow words: write the words in a rainbow of colours, each time saying aloud what each word is.
  2. Voices: we use this in class too - the students choose a voice (stinky, animal, baby, etc.), spell the word and then say it in that voice.
  3. Search and find: see if you can find this week's or other week's words around your house, in books you read or out and about.
  4. Magnet words: use alphabet magnets and a cookie sheet to create the weekly words.  Line all the letters up alphabetically then spell and say each word and put the letters back where they belong in the order.  Repeat.
  5. Rhyming words: see how many rhyming words you can find to go with the weekly words.
