Weekly Words suggestion - vowels
With the new weekly words, the students are now encountering some words they may not be very familiar with. In class we are talking about the "Magic E" who silently sits at the end of some words and makes the vowel in the word say its name/long vowel sound; for example, in "came" the Magic E makes the A say "a" not "ahh". We have also talked about the rule "when two vowels go walking, the first does the talking". So, for example in "each", the E does all the talking (says its name/long vowel sound) and the A stays silent.
I encourage you to use these terms at home to help your child remember how to read and write these words. I also encourage you to talk about the long and short vowels and sounds with your child - they are quite good at telling the difference!
Happy practicing!
